Gatura Girls Secondary was started in 1976 by the local community with the assistance of the Catholic Diocese of Nyeri. It was meant to cater for the educational needs of the local children. Initially, it started as a mixed day secondary school. Due to high cost of education in boarding school, there was need to provide the children from local community with an affordable education.

The school stands on a 7 acre piece of land which was hived from Gatura Primary School. At inception, the school had a total population of forty one (41) students enrolled in form one in 1976. The first head teacher was Mr. Joseph Kariuki Karoki.

The initial infrastructure comprised of four (4) classrooms, one (1) laboratory and one (1) staff house. In 1988, the school was converted to a purely girls’ secondary school. It was also put under sponsorship of Catholic Diocese of Murang’a.
